What is Air Duct Cleaning?
Most people are now aware that indoor air pollution is an issue of growing concern for the welfare of their families. Many companies are marketing products and services intended to improve the quality of your indoor air. You have probably seen an advertisement, received a coupon in the mail, or been approached directly by a company offering to clean your air ducts as a means of improving your home's indoor air quality.
Duct cleanings generally refer to the cleaning of various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems, including:
- The supply and return air ducts
- Registers, grilles and diffusers
- Heating and cooling coils
- Condensate drain pans (drip pans)
- Fan motor, fan housing and the air handling unit housing
Improper installation, maintainence, and operation can result in these components being contaminated with particles of dust, pollen or other debris. If moisture is present, the potential for microbiological growth (mold) is increased and spores from such growth may be released into the home. If you decide to have your heating and cooling system cleaned, it is important to make sure the service provider agrees to clean all components of the system and is qualified to do so. Methods of duct cleaning vary, although standards have been established by industry associations concerned with air duct cleaning. Typically, a service provider will use specialized tools to dislodge dirt and other debris in ducts, then vacuum them out with a high-pressure vacuum. In addition, the service provider may propose applying a solution designed to kill microbiological contaminates to the inside of the system components.
Professional Duct Cleaning Benefits
We use a machine called a Hepa-Vac. This unit is put next to your furnace. We then connect a hose from our machine to your duct work above the furnace. We go to each register and shut them off except for two, the one we are working on and the one nearest to it. (This controls the vacuum throughout the ductwork.)
We wire brush the boot area of each register and insert a hose in that same run. The hose goes up and down forcing all the debris down towards the main trunk line. Once we do all of the supply registers we go to the returns. There we use a duct scope to look inside to determine what method we need to use. We have a whip method or brush method, which we do first and then sweep the remaining dust down to the main trunk line.
Next we go to the main trunk lines and whip or brush and sweep all of the debris down towards the furnace where the Hepa-Vac is hooked up. Then we do the fan and blower compartment and the a-coil compartment that completes the air duct system.
Our last step is sanitizing. This duct cleaning service will last approximately 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 years.
